What’s Most Important in a Website?

by Mark Eckenrode

What makes a website effective? Is it the blog? The prominent contact form? The pages of testimonials? Photos of listings? MLS search?

Well… nope.

While all of these are important, none are as important as this one single powerful element. This trumps all others by a longshot and it’s the one element your website absolutely must have to succeed.

Once I tell you what it is, you’re going to holler, “of course!” (you’ll also send me chocolate chip cookies if you’re really cool ;) ) But, it’s probably not what you think it is… (you should still send cookies)

This post is a result from a discussion with an UltraStomper who asked what should be looked for in a website theme.

What elements should a successful website have?

Here’s the thing:

All of those features are good and dandy and many websites would benefit from their addition but the real guiding feature of ALL successful websites is a strategy and plan that keeps moving the visitor closer to a desired goal.

  • What is your goal for your website?
  • What do you need the visitor to do so that your website actually works for you?

Answer those question and then remove everything from your site that doesn’t support that goal. The things that don’t further your goal get in the way and are costing you leads and money.

In the following video I take you on a tour of HomeStomper and show you my thinking behind the site’s layout and elements and how they work for me in achieving my goals for the site.

What is it that you want your website to do for you?

Mark, you deserve a cookie! In Hawaii, we have great chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies, will those be ok?

If you're website doesn't have a goal, then what's its purpose? Everything on your site should support that goal.

totally. your site is your macro goal, but each page has it's own goal, too (the micro-goal).

and oh yes, macadamia nut cookies will do just fine (so goood) :)
