My Social Media Assumption: And What I Learned

by Mark Eckenrode

x marks the spot Perhaps I assumed too much. What I thought would be simple and straight forward turned into a 3-pronged assault that I wasn’t expecting. But you’d best believe I’ll be paying closer attention from now on.

See, the other week I asked HomeStomper readers to let me know if I should look at publishing my Guerrilla Marketing Plan presentation from RE BarCamp here on the blog.

I assumed things would be pretty straight forward - folks would reply in the comments section of the post. And they did. But, I also received emails, public twitter messages and private DM twitter messages.

Here are the lessons I took from it:

  • People will connect with you through the channels they feel most comfortable. Most of the folks that responded to me on Twitter hadn’t made comments on HomeStomper before but are obviously readers.
  • It’s important to have several channels for folks to connect through. I think this can be a slippery slope though - you must be able to actively manage those channels (keyword: active).
  • If folks choose to connect through a channel opposite than the original, then it’s important to acknowledge it. Let them know if it’s a good channel to actually reach you. If you have to many channels, well, good luck managing them.
  • Ultimately, relationships grow through unpredictable ways. It’s up to you (and me!) to nurture them.

I’m really glad this happened, it opened my eyes a bit more to how people use and connect through social media.

I’d love to hear your insights into this.

Using Social Network Sites to generate traffic to a real estate website 07.30.08 at 11:53 pm

I like your use of the keyword “active” :)

Like many people,I have listened to all the “gurus” telling you how to generate a TRAFFIC JAM !

After much messing around, I have settled on just s few platforms rather than trying to manage too many. There are only so many hours in the day…..

when it comes down to it, social media isn’t about how many people you can reach, it’s the quality of relationships you build… and it’s that which will allow you to reach more people. something traditional marketing still doesn’t understand.

and i’m with you on this one… if you only have limited hours, make sure the conversations you’re having are good ones.
