Thanks Mark for the insight on these sites. I've been working on a new local site dedicated to Santa Monica - samolive.net

If you or anyone else has any thoughts regarding my approach or how to make it better, please visit the site and make some suggestions.

I'll be certain to use some of this great content you are providing to us as well. Thanks Mark

by choosing to get involved in the discussion of who deserves to be called "hyperlocal" or not, i think you're missing the point of these sites and how to use them in your marketing. but, you'll need to set aside your "locals-only" mindframe to get it.

these sites are large, have tons of content, advertising budgets, and they have traffic. what many of them need most is someone on the ground in the local scene providing content... and in return receiving exposure, backlinks, and traffic. sort of like your own local column in USA Today.

Wow, where did you get that list?
There is nobody on that list doing authentic "hyperlocal" (awful buzzword) coverage. Just aggregators and would-be franchisers.
If any of your readers are sincerely interested in working with "hyperlocal" news sites - they should already know who's doing it in their neighborhood, and who's doing it well - because almost everyone else in their neighborhood already knows about the sites, reads them, discusses them, and contributes to them. National franchises and corporate imitations absolutely do not count. The only ones that do count in this world are the independents - because they are truly involved with their communities.
